Germany’s Europe Minister Michael Roth has suggested that UK Prime Minister Theresa May is presenting different versions of the Brexit talks in the UK and abroad.

Roth, the minister responsible for Europe in the German foreign ministry, said: “One must act and speak here just as one does in London.”

He added that he felt “bewildered” by how the British government has communicated in Brussels, Belgium, which was “rather differently” than it has within its own borders.

From the EU’s perspective, this does not correspond with the agreement reached last week between the two sides.

EU officials say the amount of money the UK should pay the EU is independent of negotiating a trade deal.

May and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker agreed on Friday (8 December) that “sufficient progress” had been made to move on to the next phase of Brexit negotiations.
